CDH Investment Bank took part in the Reserve Bank of Malawi savings awareness week which was commemorated across Malawi from 6th to 10th November 2023.

The aim of the week was to promote awareness of the benefits of a saving, investing and wealth creation culture among the general public. This is in line with the country’s vision of creating an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation and facilitate economic growth and development.

CDH Investment Bank participated in the commemoration week by setting up interactive pavilion at the opening ceremony that was held at the Reserve Bank of Malawi Clubhouse. Thereafter the Bank imparted savings tips to students of Chipasula Secondary School in Lilongwe on Wednesday 8th November 2023 and Nanjiriri Community Day Secondary School in Machinjiri, Blantyre on Thursday 9th November 2023. The awareness week was concluded with an engagement day at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

The financial literacy talks created awareness on the need for the youth to develop a saving culture and how they can access appropriate banking services in Malawi.  Mrs Mercy Sekani and Mrs Satakwawo Zuze represented the Bank in Lilongwe and Blantyre respectively. “Secondary school students make a great target group for the savings awareness week activities this year as we appreciate that this is the best age for us to instilling the appropriate savings culture” said Mercy Sekani, CDH Investment Bank Capital City Banking Centre Manager.

The presentations were attended by teachers and students and covered the role of banks in an economy, the types of banks, various types of accounts, how to open bank accounts and the benefits of embracing digital banking and a savings culture.

Following the presentation, the students participated in a question and answer session to ensure they understood the content and had an opportunity to get clarification on areas they did not understand. The students were delighted with the visit from CDH Investment Bank representing the Reserve Bank and Bankers Association of Malawi and were grateful that the talk gave them insights into savings and financial literacy.

“We have learnt a lot about savings, and I am eager to continue to save money better using the tips I have learnt today” said one learner.

Speaking after the event, Nanjiriri Secondary School Head Teacher Mrs Sawonda, thanked CDH Investment Bank for the visit and the lively savings week presentation. “The students enjoyed the presentation and lively approach taken in delivering the message and music to engage them. We are optimistic the students have learnt a lot and look forward to more literacy talks from the banks and Reserve Bank of Malawi” she said.
